All About Carrollwood, FL

Located in the northwestern section of Hillsborough County—one of the most populous counties in Florida—Carrollwood is a census-designated place that is less than 10 miles away from Tampa.
Matt Jetton is credited with founding Carrollwood in 1959, when his company, Sunstate Builders, bought over 300 acres of citrus nursery land. Jetton’s intention was to create a community that relieved the crowding then happening at the southern section of Tampa.
Although Carrollwood was impressive with its rural vibe (it was nicknamed “The Land of Lovely Water”) it took a little while for South Tampa residents to warm up to the fledgling area.
John S. Allen, the first president of the then-newly-founded University of South Florida, became one of Carrollwood’s first residents. By the 1960s, Carrollwood had flourished into an award-winning subdivision that sported several amenities that were still rare at the time—from air-conditioned homes and on-call repair services to neighborhood parks and lake access.
Today, Carrollwood is a prosperous neighborhood of over 30,000 residents. It includes Carollwood Village, a three-phase housing community that covers over 10 square miles and houses a 27-hole golf course called the Carrollwood Village Golf and Country Club.
