Cons Associated With Living Under an HOA

For some people buying a home for sale in Riverview, a homeowners association is a no-go – but really, what are the cons of living in a neighborhood with an HOA?

Cons Associated With Living Under an HOA

The purpose of a homeowners association is to maintain property values, but even with that in mind, living in a neighborhood with an HOA isn’t acceptable for some people. Some of the most common complaints about HOAs include:

  • Paying recurring HOA dues, which are usually collected monthly or annually; additionally, fees can change over time.
  • Being part of the HOA is mandatory (and so are those fees)
  • You have to ask the HOA to make modifications to your own property
  • There are rules and regulations that every homeowner has to abide by
  • HOAs can be overbearing in some neighborhoods

Living in a community with an HOA is not for everyone. Your best bet is to talk to your real estate agent about what you want from your neighborhood, and if you’re thinking about buying in one with an HOA, ask your agent to get a copy of its rules and regulations so you can make an informed decision.
