Don't Fall in Love With a House Until You Know the Neighbors

Sometimes our neighborhoods are more important than the homes we live in—and that’s never more apparent than when you’re living in a beautiful home tucked in a neighborhood you hate.

The solution? Try to get to know the neighbors—or at least get a good feel for the subdivision or community—before you make an offer on a house.

Checking Out Your New Neighborhood

Drive through the neighborhood early in the morning, at lunch time, and in the evening. See if people are out and about, and if they are, stop and say hello. You can get a lot of information on a neighborhood by talking to its residents, and you’ll have a head start on getting to know your future neighbors as an added bonus.

Location, Location, Location

It’s not only about the neighbors (although you’d probably be better off not buying a home next to a frat house).

It’s about location, too.

Is the neighborhood you’re looking into smack-dab in the middle of a growing area? Could a freeway be built on the fringe of the subdivision? Check the zoning plans of your potential new neighborhood before you make an offer on a home there; you’ll be glad you did if something comes in to disrupt your enjoyment of the area.
