Whether you’re redecorating your new home or making some upgrades to prepare your home for sale, don’t overlook the possibilities of updating your interior doors. There are an array of options to fit your needs, your budget and the home’s décor.

The Usual Interior Door

Most interior doors hang in a frame. Hinges allow the door to swing in one direction. In most cases, these doors are one of a few standard sizes. This makes them relatively easy to replace. The most affordable doors are lightweight, hollow-core doors. Made with wood grain or smooth panels that cover a honeycomb-like center, these are also relatively easy to hang in an existing frame.

Heavier solid wood or solid-core composite doors offer great soundproofing than hollow-core options. They are generally more expensive, but built to withstand time and abuse. Hanging a solid door can be tricky, so you may want to consider a pre-hung model if you’re doing your own upgrade.

French Doors

French doors can be an attractive upgrade for a wide doorway. This can be an ideal choice for maintaining an open concept floor plan but allowing for division of space when desired. If you desire privacy, you can choose frosted glass or rice paper in place of clear glass.

Door Options for Odd Spaces

Certain spaces may be awkward for a traditional interior door. The doorway may be narrow, or the room strangely shaped. If a hinged door is problematic for your space, a pocket door may be the ideal solution. Pocket doors slide into a wall when opened. They’re hidden inside the “pocket” between walls when fully open.

A similar concept, but one with more style, is the barn door. Barn doors hang from a track installed over the doorway on one side. The door and its track are often decorative, and styles can range from country charm to sleek and modern.
