Should You Decorate Your Home for the Holidays When it's For Sale - Sell Home Tampa Bay

When your house is on the market, particularly during this time of year, you’re probably wondering why you should decorate for the holidays. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to that question, but most experts agree that you should keep a holiday décor to a minimum. It’s fine to embrace the season, but remember, you need to appeal to the widest possible audience of potential buyers – and overdoing it on the décor can make your home appear smaller or cluttered.

What Décor is Okay?

Use your best judgment when you’re determining what décor is acceptable, and if you’re unsure, ask your Realtor®.

It’s also incredibly important that you clean and stage your home before you decorate.

The main idea is “less is more.” That means you should keep your holiday décor subtle.

Good ideas:

  • A bowl of pinecones as the centerpiece on your coffee table or dining room table
  • A simple wreath on your front door, such as one made from silver glass balls
  • A poinsettia plant near your front door

Bad ideas:

  • Mismatched holiday décor
  • A huge Christmas tree in a small room
  • Inflatable snowmen, sleighs and other large decorative items in your yard

Remember, the key is to remain neutral. That’s not to say you can’t decorate, but you should avoid decorating with items that may be off-putting to some potential buyers. Further, the last thing you want to do is create the impression that your home is cluttered (or that it’s easy to clutter). Simple is always best when your home is on the market during the holiday season.
