No matter who you are, moving is stressful. Even the most organized people have a tough time keeping tabs on everything during a move, so you can use this checklist to help ensure you’re on track for everything to go smoothly.
The Pre-Moving Checklist
1 Month Before Your Move: Handle Subscriptions and Memberships
When you’re packing up to move, there’s so much going on. With just 30 days left before the big day, it’s a good idea to take care of all your subscriptions and memberships. Call magazines, visit the gym if an insurer that you’re not racking up charges for services and products you’re not using after you move.
2 Weeks Before Your Move: Change Your Address With the USPS
You’ll need to officially change your address with the USPS (you can do that online here). While the postal service often acts quickly, it’s best to give yourself a little extra time – that way you won’t miss a beat when you move into your new home.
Now is also a great time to gather all your important financial paperwork, including bills, insurance statements and other documents. Keep everything together (it won’t hurt to keep the kids’ birth certificates, immunization records and other documents in the same folder, too, so you’ll always know where to look when you need something).
1 Week Before Your Move: Get Photos of Your Electronics
One of the easiest ways to keep track of which wire goes where on your home theater system, stereos and other electronics is to take a quick picture of your setup before you pack everything away. You’ll be able to refer to your phone when it’s time to set things up in your new home – no tangled wires or frustration necessary.
