Formerly known as “Long Pond,” Valrico is about 15 miles away from Tampa. The city got its name, which means “rich valley” in Spanish, in the late 19th Century when a Tufts College professor bought land in the area. Now a burgeoning community of over 35,000 people, Valrico provides quite a number of things to check out.
Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad
Valrico owes its early growth to the construction of this system of railroads, which made transportation much easier within the area. Today, Valrico has a subdivision that is part of this system, which has some of the oldest railroads in Florida.
