Your real estate agent will walk through your home with you to point out areas that could use a little TLC – minor or major upgrades, repairs or refreshing – but there are three things you can do behind-the-scenes to make sure your house is as appealing as possible to potential buyers:
- Vacuum or sweep
- Load and unload the dishwasher
- Clean bathrooms
In addition to regular cleaning, making sure you do these three tasks each day can help you sell your home.
#1. Vacuum or sweep
You don’t have to deep-clean your floors every day, but if you get in the habit of sweeping up crumbs as soon as you notice them or having the kids run the vacuum after the dog shakes off his daily stresses, you’ll be in a better position when you get the call that buyers are coming.
At the end of each day, make sure you run through the whole house with the broom or vacuum. Spot-mop as necessary!

#2. Load and unload the dishwasher
Sinks pile up quickly, so the safest bet is to have everyone put their own dirty dishes in the dishwasher as soon as they’re done. The sink can be totally off-limits (which is nice on its own!) unless there are pots and pans, which you’ll wash as soon as you’re finished eating.
#3. Clean bathrooms
Bathrooms can get funky pretty fast, which means it’s important that everyone cleans as they go. You’ll still need to clean the toilets, sinks and counter tops – and probably the mirrors – at the end of each day, but making sure everyone who uses the lavatory picks up after themselves is a big help.
