Buying a Tampa Bay House With a Pool? The Chlorine vs. Saltwater Debate

tampa bay house for sale with a pool - chlorine or saltwater

If you’re looking for a Tampa Bay home with a swimming pool, you’re faced with two choices: a chlorine pool or a saltwater pool.

So which is better?

Chlorine vs. Saltwater: The Debate

Ultimately, the decision on whether chlorine or saltwater is better is a highly personal one. But each type of pool has its own advantages, and if you purchase a Tampa Bay home with one, there’s no reason you can’t switch to the other type if you prefer it more.

Water Quality With Chlorine and Saltwater

Most experts agree that there isn’t much difference in water quality between chlorine and saltwater pools.

It’s also important to know but saltwater pools do have chlorine in them. The difference? The chlorine found in a saltwater pool is formed through a chemical electrolysis that occurs within a saltwater chlorinator that’s actually part of the pool system.

As a result, chlorine levels in a saltwater pool and are typically lower than those found in a traditional pool (one that requires the owner to add chlorine periodically). Many people find that saltwater pools are less drying to the skin and less irritating to the eyes, though, so that may be a factor in your decision.

Maintenance Expenses With Chlorine or Saltwater

When you own any type of pool, you can expect maintenance expenses. With a standard chlorine pool, you’ll need to purchase the appropriate chemicals, testing kits and other necessities. While you will not spend as much on chemicals with a saltwater pool, don’t forget that salt is corrosive to ladders, concrete, decking, and even the salt chlorinator that produces it.
