Considering The Right Flooring For Your Home

Floors are constantly tread upon – but we still use them to beautify our home. They are a huge factor in the appearance of your home and one of the main factors people consider when buying a home. There are many things to consider when choosing flooring.

You’ll need to consider your budget. Ceramic tile, marble and hardwood floors are gorgeous, but they are also on the pricier end of the spectrum. Carpet is at the cheaper end (Although some carpet is anything but cheap!) There are low to high priced products in all categories, but there are many other things to consider when you choose flooring.

One of your primary concerns should be the health of those in your home. If you have anyone with severe allergies or asthma, carpet may be the most unhealthy choice. Because it is made of fibers, it collects hair, dust, dirt, dander and pollen. Even when vacuumed regularly, it is more likely to exacerbate asthma, although there are types of carpet that are considered more allergy and asthma-friendly.

Another health problem to consider is if you have any frail, chronically ill, or elderly people living in your home. Slick services may cause falls – and more injury when they are fallen on. Another thing to consider is that throw rugs, which many people like to have if they don’t have carpet – are a hazard to people who are prone to falls. Some people even choose to cover hard wood flooring simply because the reason of safety.

Durability is another major factor. Children and animals are hard on floors, frequently dropping things, spilling things, and animals may have claws that scratch floors. Certain types of hard wood flooring are less durable than others, but hardwood is known to incur dents and scratches. Some of these may be able to be buffed out, but that is time consuming. However, hardwood is well loved and popular across generations, so it holds good value.

Laminate flooring is durable and often can give the appearance of hard wood or tile, and it is easily cleaned. It also can have specific sections replaced easily if they become damaged. It will buckle if exposed to high moisture, though, and may not be a great choice for bathrooms and kitchens, depending on your lifestyle and the amount of traffic through your home.

If you choose carpet, you can expect to need to vacuum and shampoo regularly, as well as spot-treat any stains as soon as they occur. You also should be prepared to replace carpet at least every ten years, especially high-traffic areas.
