Bathroom Style-Booster #1: Revive Your Cabinets

Buyers like to see light, bright bathrooms – so if you have dark cabinets, or if they’re painted and could use a touch-up, give them a little TLC. You don’t have to pull them out and start fresh; you just need to refinish them so they’re more modern and appealing to prospective buyers.

Bathroom Style-Booster #2: Refresh the Caulking

Check all the caulking in your bathroom to figure out whether you need to refresh it. Sometimes caulk turns yellow, and it attracts hard water stains and mildew; it can also start to peel over time. If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to re-caulk.

    Bathroom Style-Booster #3: Declutter Ruthlessly

Clear off your counters and go through your cabinets. Remove anything you haven’t used in 6 months or more. And while you’re at it, find a new home for your toothbrush and other toiletries – you don’t want to leave them on the counters when your home is being photographed or when prospective buyers come to check things out.

You need to know that buyers can – and often do – open every cabinet (including the medicine cabinet) and drawer. What they see inside will contribute to their overall impression of your home, so you want them to see that there’s plenty of space and that you know how to keep things clean.

Pro Tip: Remove all medications from your medicine cabinet before prospective buyers come to see your home. Even if they’re not narcotics or have no street value, take them out – both for safety and privacy reasons.

Bathroom Style-Booster #4: Improve the Lighting

Because buyers enjoy light, bright bathrooms, consider upgrading your light fixtures if they’re dated or don’t illuminate the room just right. You should also consider swapping out your current bulbs for LEDs that measure around 2,700 kelvins – that’s the light that people tend to look best in. We’re not saying that your lighting can give buyers the confidence boost they need to make an offer on your home, but we are saying it can’t hurt to make them feel good when they glance in your bathroom mirror.

Bathroom Style-Booster #5: Add Luxury Touches

Though your bathroom doesn’t have to look like a spa retreat, the closer you can get to that, the better. Add luxury touches like a live plant, rolled towels in a basket (just make sure they’re brand-new and unused), elegantly packaged soaps and scrubs (still in the package), and an unlit candle or two. One word of caution, though: If adding luxury touches would make the bathroom appear cluttered or cramped, you’re better off without them.
