New Design Planned For The Historic Mediterranean Revival Property In Former YMCA Building
The St. Petersburg Mediterranean Revival-style property that was the former YMCA building is expected to finally see a new development. The current owner of the 116 Fifth Street S has planned an eight-story tower with a rooftop bar on the property behind the former YMCA. This new building would have 39 rooms. Plus, the historic building on the property that has been plagued for years by trespassers will have 44 rooms. The city’s Community Planning and Preservation Commission unanimously approved the conceptual plan, with a few conditions to be met by October.
For example, a phased rehabilitation plan must be provided for the historic building, plus, they need to see a detailed report of any repairs that have been completed so far. Plus, they want to see a parking plan and they want to know if any of the historic building would be removed or built upon.
The old YMCA was one of the areas largest community funded projects back in the ’20s during the land boom.
