Reclaimed Water Conserves Resource And Money In Hillsborough County

In our last blog post, we talked about when residents of Hillsborough County can water their lawns; however, residents on the Reclaimed Water program can water their lawns whenever they want to. The Reclaimed Water program in Hillsborough County lets residents re-use highly treated waste water for irrigation and many other purposes. See, around half of the community’s water is used for irrigation, and that’s pretty much a waste of good aquifer drinking water, right?

On a case-by-case basis, Hillsborough County residents can tap into the Reclaimed Water service offered by Hillsborough County. The county works with homeowner associations to determine feasibility of installing a reclaimed water distribution system to subdivisions. Homeowners in these subdivisions help save potable water, reduce the cost of their potable water, and get to use this water source for natural systems needs and irrigation needs. Since some nutrients remain in the water, it also reduces the amount of fertilizer that is used, which in turn helps the health of the Bay and our waterways.

Now, you can’t drink the reclaimed water or use it to fill pools and hot tubs, but you can use it on your lawns, on many crops, and for other purposes. Importantly, since a little chloride salt remains in the water, some azaleas and roses shouldn’t be water using this reclaimed water.
