Three Easy Ways to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Most of us are concerned about the carbon footprint we leave on the earth, but many of us are so busy with careers, parenting, volunteering, and other activities that it becomes a struggle to try to remember exactly what the rules are for which recycling company, how to repurpose something, etc. Fortunately, the good news about waste reduction is it’s not an all or nothing game – any little bit that you manage to accomplish does the earth a big favor and likely makes you feel better as result. There are countless ways you can help the earth, and they all don’t have to require lots of time or commitment. Small simple steps can make a big impact.

Three Easy Ways to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

  •  Buy Products with less packaging
  •  Take reusable bags with you while shopping
  •  Ditch the Disposables

When you go to the grocery store, buy products that have less packaging. That means, when possible, buy your fruits and vegetables fresh. If possible, can or freeze them yourself. This will save you a lot of money and a lot of plastic and tin packaging that would likely end up in a landfill. It’s better for you as well – canned foods have a high sodium content! Think about snacks that aren’t packaged. Apples, bananas, pears, oranges – these all are without packaging and are perfect for lunchboxes!

Take your own reusable bags when you go shopping. Some grocery stores even charge for plastic or paper bags now. If you don’t have specific reusable bags, save your plastic or brown bags from your last shopping trip and ask them to be used again this trip. Remember that not everything needs a bag. You don’t need a bag for a gallon of milk or a 6 pack of water or soda, for instance.

Disposable things are convenient, but they are expensive and they also cost the planet in big ways. If you can’t ditch the disposable diapers or razors just yet, consider ditching the disposable plates, napkins, and Tupperware for glassware and washable napkins. Forget the take and toss sippy cups and buy a few good regular sippy cups.
