Three Hacks To Clean Your Mattress

A mattress is a huge investment, and while most of us are pretty good at cleaning our bed linens and pillows, we aren’t so good at cleaning our mattresses. This is unfortunate because we spend about 1/3 of our lives in bed, and it’s probably safe to say that the vast majority don’t always shower right before we hit the sheets. Add to the fact that we sweat and slobber in our sleep, and it’s no surprise that our mattresses are hoarding some serious germs, even with a good mattress cover. The problem isn’t that we are lazy – the problem is most of us probably aren’t sure exactly how to go about cleaning a mattress. Fortunately, there are several ways to help make your mattress a little fresher.

Three Hacks To Clean Your Mattress

  • Vacuum your mattress with your vacuum attachment
  • Spot clean stains
  • Sprinkle Baking Soda Over the Mattress

Dust mites hide everywhere, and they love to feast on dead skin cells, which your body sheds regularly. Make sure to vacuum your mattress regularly, as this will remove skin cells, dust mites, and dust mite poop. The good news is, once you start doing this, your allergies may suddenly get much better, if you suffer from allergies. Make sure to get in crevices of the mattress and around tags, where dust mites like to hang out.

Stains are bound to happen. If they are from food or drink, some dawn dish detergent and a little peroxide will probably remove them. Make sure to blot, not scrub, as scrubbing will sink the stain deeper into the mattress. If the stains are from a human body or a pet (vomit, urine, blood) you need an enzyme cleaner, available at most supermarkets or pet stores. Again, blot at the stains with a cloth instead of scrubbing. Follow the directions on the bottle.

After vacuuming and removing stains, it is time to freshen the mattress. Sprinkle plain baking soda generously over the mattress – it will absorb moisture and odors. Allow it to sit for an hour or so and then thoroughly vacuum again. You may want to place a waterproof pad over your mattress at this point, but even with one, you’ll still need to vacuum your mattress regularly to get to skin cells and dust mites that accumulate.
