Three Pretty Vegetables To Grow In Your Flower Beds

People love garden-fresh vegetables, but few want to deal with the work of a huge garden. Fortunately, you don’t have to. There are plenty of vegetables that are capable of being grown in flower beds or even pots! They are beautiful and can blend right in with your flowers, and many have gorgeous vines and showy flowers before they start to actually grow vegetables. It’s a nice way to mix things up if you want to add some variety and some usefulness to your garden.

  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Cucumbers

There are so many varieties of tomatoes, from cherry tomatoes to large “big boy” varieties, but all are tasty and beautiful, and all grow well in sunny, warm, wet Florida! They are very easy to maintain. Cut the leaves to encourage the roots to grow deep in your soil. An added bonus is that you will likely get many “volunteers” after your first tomato plant, especially if you allow a tomato or two to decompose in the soil.

Peppers are hardy and also of high variety, from sweet banana peppers, to green bell peppers, to piping hot jalapeno peppers! The enjoy the sun and heat in moderation, so are best grown in Florida in the spring. They need frequent watering (usually not a problem in Florida) and like to be planted close together as they literally seem to “hold hands” to provide each other stability and support.

Cucumbers are vine vegetables, and need to be planted atop little mounds or hills in your beds, so that the vines can trail down and water can drain off the rooted plant. These are pretty plants that will flower little yellow flowers wherever a cucumber is going to be. They need more space than the other vegetables, so plant them at the ends of your flower beds to allow for some spillage of vines and cucumbers into your yard.
