What Do Buyers Notice First?

what do buyers notice first - sell your house tampa bay

When your home is on the market, you know that potential buyers will come visit – and your home has plenty to say.

Your Realtor® has probably already told you that you only have one chance to make a good first impression, and that’s where home staging comes in. But in order to stage your home properly, you need to know what buyers notice first… and it might not be what you think.

What Do Buyers Notice First?

Naturally, curb appeal is incredibly important. The outside of your home hints at what the inside will be like. (If you’re not sure how you can spruce up your curb appeal, ask your Realtor – he or she will be happy to provide you with plenty of suggestions.)

However, once buyers are inside, the first thing they’ll most likely notice is how it smells.

Sure, your home is neutral.

Isn’t it?

You may not know that the faint odor of mothballs is wafting out of your closet. Maybe you’re not aware that the cat’s litter box (even though it’s clean) still has its own scent. The truth is that there are dozens of things that we all become accustomed to in our own homes, and we don’t even notice them anymore.

It’s always – always – a good idea to invite a friend over and ask for brutal honesty.

How to Clear Out Odors

In many cases, simply opening all your windows and airing out your home will do the trick. If not, experts suggest:

  • Hiring professional carpet cleaners
  • Cleaning all your upholsteries
  • Removing cat litter boxes and other items that could cause odor until your house is sold
  • Thoroughly cleaning your air ducts
