Ybor City’s Rich History
Ybor City, Florida’s first industrial town, was founded as a community in 1886. It was first industrialized when Don Vicente Martinez-Ybor moved his cigar factory from Key West to Tampa. At that point, most of southern areas of Florida were still unsettled.
The cigar factory he built was the largest brick structure in Florida, and other cigar-makers soon followed. Immigrants from mostly Spain, Cuba and Sicily came to work in the cigar factories. Romanian merchants soon opened shops in the area to serve the community. Before long, German lithographers came to Ybor with the latest printing technology and engravers. They began producing cigar labels for the first time.
The Labor Temple became an important part of the industries’ infrastructure. It wasn’t even just about organized labor either. It grew into social clubs and enrichment. These social clubs resulted in a type of healthcare system before HMOs ever even existed. This history was the building blocks of the culturally diverse Ybor we know and love today!
